The story of East Africa's first Claude developer community.

cat origin-story.md

It started with a simple idea: what if Kenya's developers had a dedicated space to explore, build, and ship with Claude? On January 25, 2026, that idea became reality when over 50 developers packed into iHiT Events Space in Westlands, Nairobi for what would become Kenya's very first Claude Code meetup.

The energy in the room was electric. A live demo showed Claude Code building a full-stack application from scratch. Then came the moment that brought it all home: a showcase of Mulinga, a farm management system tracking over 26,000 coffee plants across multiple farms in Kenya — built entirely with Claude Code. It wasn't just a tech demo. It was proof that AI-powered development tools could solve real problems, right here in East Africa.

By the end of the afternoon, the Discord server was live, new collaborations had formed, and something bigger was clearly underway. Within days, Anthropic invited the founding team to join the Claude Community Ambassadors program — recognizing that what started in a Nairobi coworking space had the potential to grow across the continent.

Today, Claude Community Kenya is expanding to Mombasa, partnering with universities like TU Mombasa and organizations like Swahilipot Hub Foundation, and building a pipeline of developers who are ready to lead the AI era. We are not just learning about AI — we are building with it, every day.
